"Grappling with ideas" was a new approach to freshman orientation which was started in the fall of 1962 and continued until 1968 and possibly longer. The orientation program involved a booklet, "Grappling with ideas", and a series of small discussion groups. The purpose was to instill in students from the beginning a spirit of intellectual community by means of reading, study, and a free exchange of ideas. The collection consists of the yearly revised editions of the booklet, "Grappling with ideas" and a few miscellaneous materials describing the program and giving suggestions for discussion leaders.
